Anatomy of a Best-Selling Story—Structure Part One

Structure is the periodic table of novel writing. What goes where, why and when

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

Structure Matters Structure Matters

Writers must understand structure if they hope to be successful. Yes, it might take five years to finish the first novel, but if we land a three book deal, we don’t have 15 years to turn in our books. Also, in the new paradigm of publishing, writers who produce more content have greater odds of making money at this writing thing.

Understanding structure helps us become faster, cleaner, better writers. Structure is essential to all stories, from screenplays to novels to epic space operas.

Plotters tend to do better with structure, but even pantsers (those writers who write by the seat of their pants) NEED to understand structure or revisions will be HELL. Structure is one of those boring topics like finance or taxes. It isn’t nearly as glamorous as creating characters or reading about ways to unleash our creative energy.

We live in a wonderful world. We are connected more than ever. Through Facebook, I’ve connected with friends and family that I couldn’t even FIND before 2005 without hiring a P.I. Through this blog, I am able to help authors all over the world and that is wonderful. I’m able to keep up with all kinds of news and world events and be a better citizen.

But all this technology has a steep price and we are wise to remain vigilant. Lately some things have me really overwhelmed (verklempt) so let’s chat.

Social media sites like Facebook now keep us abreast of all the horrible happenings in the world. In a way this is good. In the “old days” news and opinions were filtered through media gatekeepers. And sure, news is supposed to be unbiased, but so long as humans are relaying…

Persistence Prevails When All Else Fails—Being an Outlaster

Another great motivational blog by Kristen Lamb

Monday we talked about The DIP, so it seemed like a good idea to talk about being an OUTLASTER. I had years of honing this skill. Some of you may not know, but I dropped out of high school twice.

***Note: I am the reason for the current Texas truancy laws 😀 .

Returning to high school and graduating at 19 was seriously humbling. My GPA was so low, my classes (very literally) were one step above Special Ed. When I took my SAT, the scores were so bad, I thought they might check me for a pulse.

Really glad they gave me some points for spelling my name correctly, LOL.

After a year and a half of junior college I won an Air Force scholarship to TCU to become a doctor. Six months in, the school didn’t close when we had a bad ice storm and I slipped…

Dip Happens—What Do We DO When Nothing Seems To Change?

An excellent blog on staying motivated and getting past the “dips.”

Often I blog about things I am going through. Sometimes just writing things down, sketching out a plan of action, recalibrating MY perspective helps a lot. Hey, if nothing else, I have a blog post 😀 .

Lately, I’ve been in what Seth Godin calls…The DIP. In fact, I am even talking about The Dip over on my Dojo Diva blog for those who want more (and also a better chance of winning my 20 Page Death Star Critique).

*dangles carrot*

What is THE DIP? The Dip is that span of suck before the breakthrough. The Dip is where character develops, where dreams grow, where WE grow. Bad news is this is also the place where most people give up.

I’d love to say I’ve never given up when faced with a particularly tenacious Dip, but I am a terrible liar. Dips are tough. Why are Dips so hard?

Call to Action

Trumpet call All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

– Edmund Burke

I made a commitment to myself to write a few pages on my new novel everyday of this new year. However, I am putting aside my novel writing time to write this “Call to Action” instead. It is time, folks, actually it is past time for we as Americans, Christians, and/or just supporters of freedom of speech and of the press to take action because if we don’t take action soon, we will not be able to as those rights will be gone, stripped away in the name of political correctness and/or by terrorists in the name of Allah.

Our country was founded on several basic principles, and I am not going to get into a discussion about all of them just two, i.e. freedom of speech and freedom of the press. To me these two basic rights are the foundation for all our other rights because without the ability to express our thoughts, ideas and beliefs freely without the free of reprisal we will lose all our other rights. If we can’t express our faith, our thoughts on gun control, our thoughts on government policies and/or our thoughts on the laws of the land we cannot guard them, support them, or change them. Without a voice, we have nothing – we can change nothing, we can do nothing if we cannot freely discuss what we believe and what we want to do about those beliefs. Yet, that is what is being threatened today.

Yesterday, three men, and I use the term loosely, executed – and it was an execution that was deliberately planned and cold-hardheartedly implemented – 12 people for simply speaking out on what they believed. Yet, why should we be surprised by this. It has been coming for some time. Since the 1960s when it became politically incorrect to use certain terms for some racial groups – PLEASE UNDERSTAND ME ON THIS – I DO NOT THINK THIS WAS WRONG!! THIS WAS RIGHT AND NECESSARY. However, this laid the foundation for a new trend. It became the fashion to accommodate any group of individuals who were offended by a particular public policy or saying. Thus the pendulum swung from its intended position of creating unity to the far side of creating division. We now watch what we say and how we say it. We speak carefully, and in couched terms to avoid causing injury to any particular group. Thus, our culture has slowly change from an atmosphere of open discourse and exchange of ideas to one of covert and shadowed public expressions with all our public figures making amends and condensations to any group that protested about a public statement, policy or law.

Into this Ready-mix of political correctness and appeasement, come the Muslim terrorists, using our own political correctness to foster a climate of hostility and repression for our rights of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We should not be surprised by yesterday’s assault on the press and on the right of free speech. The foundation was laid years ago and this is the wall of oppression it has built.

Yet, where are our defenders? Where are those that would assault and tear down this wall? Where are the Hollywood moguls, the stars, and Washington politicians, the talking heads, the political activists, and commentators? Why are they silent on this? Are they now so afraid to speak the truth, to defend our basic rights? Is it because the aura of political correctness has created a miasma of disinformation and fear that their collective brain can no longer see what is happening? They are quick to defend any popular cause that is trending, yet on a real cause like the loss of our rights to speak freely – they are strangely silent.

Therefore, it is up to us. It is up to anyone that has a following of any kind to start speaking out. To raise an outcry against this oppression, to defend our rights to read what we want, to speak how we want to speak, to publish what we want to publish. If you are an author take a moment and ask your followers to speak out to start speaking up for our rights. If you are pastor, a minister, a youth group leader, a missionary speak out –fight this evil with your written and spoken words as well as your prayers. Fight this evil openly while we still can. This is your, CALL TO ACTION!!

“Don’t do something just because everyone else is doing it. If you see a group of people doing wrong, don’t join them. You must not let them persuade you to do wrong things—you must do what is right and fair.”

Shine: How To Walk The Talk

SHINE3 (1)Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,

and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matt. 5:16

The Bible tells us we need to “shine before men,” but what does this mean and how do we do it? In Shine: How to Walk the Talk, Nancy Segovia lays out a series of simple steps you can to take to walk the talk: to love God above all and your neighbor as yourself. Using parables, folk tales, and struggles from her own life, she provides uplifting insights into the Christian walk that can make your first steps easier. She examines scripture for clues on what it means to shine, how to reflect God’s love, and what to do when the muddy messes of life blot out God’s light in you. You will relate to her failings, those “Duh!” moments when spiritual understanding begins to dawn. Most important, you will learn how to apply that understanding―you will learn how to turn your talk into your walk and how to help others to do the same.

The reviews for Shine have been overwhelmingly positive everyone from pastors to book reviewers to authors has raved about the honesty with which the book was written and the practicality of its message. Here are a few of their comments:

  • Shine: How To Walk The Talk is a warm, witty and inspiring book that will touch your soul. Nancy Segovia shares an honest sensitivity to God’s creation that inspires us to take a closer look at our lives and how God is working.  –  Rev. Perry Comer; D.Th. M.Div.  – Pastor Christ Community Church – Monroe, NC
  •  From the diary of her own life, Nancy Segovia shares a mandate God is seeking to restore in these last days: “Love the Lord, your God with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.” Let Shine: How To Walk The Talk inspire you to love God as you never have before, and minister His love in the power of the Holy Spirit to those He brings across your path each day.  –  Pastor Randy Sandusky – Gateway of Praise Worship Center – Divide, CO
  •  Nancy Segovia’s Shine: How To Walk The Talk teaches us how to turn on the SONlight in our lives and dispel clouds of doubt and depression. This beautifully written book will change your life. I highly recommend it. – Nancy Mehl –  Author of the Road To Kingdom Series published by Bethany House Publishers
  • As the simple buttercup takes time to grow and flourish before it can reflect the sunlight, so must a Christian grow in Jesus over time. With sensitivity and grace, Nancy Segovia shares her inspiring journey to Our Lord. Well written and uplifting prose. – Laurel Johnson, Midwest Book Review and Author of The Grass Dance and The Alley of Wishes
